Media: Adaptive Path talk User Expectations of Smart Devices

"User Expectations in a World of Smart Devices" by Mike Kuniavsky of Adaptive Path is a step back from the nuts and bolts - a reflection on 'what it all means' from a well-known practitioner. He considers how the trends around today may affect our business — and the world — five years from now.

'I'm increasingly convinced that, as networks of smart objects permeate our environment, people's attitudes toward technology will become more animist. In other words, we'll start to anthropomorphize our stuff,' he says.

He asks lots of difficult questions as he goes and, even if the changes he describes are unlikely all to be with us in five years, he clearly identifies a growing challenge:

'How will design communicate the functionality of objects? As we move from general-purpose smart devices to ones that solve specific problems, how will devices tell us what they do?'
