BT launches Campaign to get Kids teaching Older Generations to Surf

Source: UN, 5 December 2003
Submitted by Ann Light

Research from BT suggests that children - particularly young teenagers - are the most effective spur to encourage reluctant parents or grandparents online. Nearly a third of parents and grandparents - 32% - have been taught or encouraged to surf the internet by a child aged between 13 to 16 years. Further, 19% of parents and grandparents have either learnt a new skill or been educated via the Web following online help from a five to eight year old.

Recognising this, BT has launched a campaign, Internet Rangers, to enlist the support of children in tackling the problems of digital exclusion. It provides tools and advice helping youngsters to get their families online.

Lack of confidence is a major barrier, which prevents many adults from using technology. Four in ten parents admit they have to depend on their child when online. And relying on a young relative for IT help is leaving one in ten parents and grandparents feeling embarrassed and more than a quarter feeling out of touch.

Mike Hughes, head of the BT digital inclusion campaign, said: 'Children are very confident using technology and it makes sense for parents and grandparents to tap into their skills and knowledge. These youngsters can play a key role in helping to bridge the digital divide and we're hoping that the Internet Rangers campaign is a step towards achieving this aim.'

The site itself reads: 'Are you fed up with your parents not being able to send or receive your emails properly? Does your Gran think that surfing is something you do on the beach in summer?'

10 online activities are promoted to get oldies more involved: Music, Entertainment, Games, Creating your own website, Sport, Email, Shopping, Route Planning - 'if your parents are forever getting lost on the road, why not help them by finding out the best route in advance' - Education and Travel.
