Media: Web Informant looks at Internal Pop-Ups

"Pop-up pains" describes the two kinds of pop-ups that assail us when using the internet. The first is marketing that fires in the browser and presents an advert to us alongside our chosen page. But David Strom's column deals with the other kind more fully... the sort that appear as system messages in front of you, even when you are no longer connected to the Web. Some of these are ads for pop-up suppressors...

He looks at the marketing model and how unpopular they are: 'It would be considered slick if it wasn't so sick.' Then he tells you how to get shot of them and that's the bit I'm going to quote fully here, in case it's new to you. Happy disabling!

'Microsoft, in one of its many security bulletins, recommends that people turn off this service (in XP, you go to Control Panel/Admin Tools/Services, then double click Messenger and change the startup type to disabled and stop the service). I concur with this recommendation, and suggest you turn off this service at once.'
