Brief: Upgrading Back on the Agenda means Improved Economy?

Source: UN, 24 February 2004
Submitted by Ann Light

An ITtoolbox survey during January 2004, that was sponsored by hardware firm Dell, found that of more than 500 global business IT decision-makers, nearly three-quarters plan to replace personal computers and nearly half plan to replace laptops over the coming year.

The survey, which took place in companies that ranged in size from less than 100 to more than 1,000 employees, found that 72% percent planned to replace their PCs, however only 2.5% intended to switch all their old units for new ones. The largest group of the respondents (30.6%) were replacing up to a quarter of their existing kit. Respondents were mostly from the US, with a sizable but undifferentiated contribution from Europe and Asia.

New business applications was a major reason for companies to upgrade. Operating systems were also being replaced with newer models.
