Using Ambient Technology to Support the Social Creative Process - Eindhoven, Netherlands

Deadline: 27 August 2004
Source: UN, 20 August 2004
Submitted by Eamonn O'Neill

"Using Ambient Technology to Support the Social Creative Process" is a workshop at the Second European Symposium on Ambient Intelligence, Technical University of Eindhoven, the Netherlands, 8 November 2004.

The deadline is fast approaching. Workshop position papers should be submitted by Friday 27 August 2004.

Many researchers refer to activities such as design as creative processes, yet provide little definition of what they mean by creativity or how people go about being creative. Our research has led us to viewing such activities as social creative processes, involving communication and creative insight amongst a group of participants. During this workshop we intend to develop an operational definition of what it is to be creative and explore how ambient technologies can support the social creative process.

Ambient technologies are increasingly being proposed to develop environments to support the creative process, such as in participatory design. However, participatory design practice in general and these environments in particular tend to be founded not on theory but on practical experience. Whilst there is a great deal of value in practical experience, we propose developing a theory of creativity as a basis for understanding and supporting the social creative process of design. With such a theoretical basis, we can begin to explain, predict and empirically test how ambient technologies may best support creative processes.

Key issues that we wish to explore in this workshop include:
. What is creativity?
. What is the process of being creative?
. Can ambient technologies support this creative process?
. How can ambient technologies support this creative process?
. What advantages and disadvantages exist in using ambient technologies over others available?
. Can our knowledge of creativity enhance the use of ambient technologies?
. Can ambient technologies give us a better understanding of creativity?

We anticipate a Special Issue of a journal resulting from the process and hope that there will be other useful outputs.

To attend the workshop, please submit a 2 to 4 page position paper by Friday 27 August 2004. Position papers will be reviewed and participants will be notified of acceptance by Friday 3 September 2004.

Please format your position paper using the ACM SIGCHI Conference Template (http://www.chi2004.org/res/CHI04PubsFormat.doc) and submit it to the Workshop Committee (chairs-w2@eusai.net), details on the workshop website.

In order to attend the workshop you must have a position paper accepted. If accepted to the workshop, please remember to register for the Symposium at www.eusai.net.
