Chinese/English Magazine launches with Forums

Source: UN, 27 October 2004
Submitted by Ann Light

uiGarden is soon to be launched as a bilingual on-line magazine that provides an opportunity for researchers and practitioners who work in the user interface design (including user experience, information architecture, GUI, and usability) field in the Chinese and the English speaking worlds to publish their thinking and exchange views with each other.

Two forums have already gone live: one in English and one in Chinese. They can be reached by following the link below.

uiGarden founder Christina Li, says 'As practitioners in the UI design field, we hope to walk in this field farther and believe there is very wide development space for user-centred design. The motive force of building uiGarden stems from our persistent passion for user-centred design. We hope that uiGarden can become an open platform, where swift and free information exchanges are offered to professional people.

'People encounter different cultures every day, especially in immigrating countries like Canada, the U.S, as well as in the UK. As designers who have worked both in the east and in the west, we would like to become a bridge between the western community and the eastern culture. There's much potential to explore the Chinese market - nearly one forth of the world's population. On the other hand, we also want to bring the newest research and development in the west to China, in order to help the Chinese design and usability industry to keep up with the world.'

Li urges people to start using the forums and thinking about the kinds of article they would like to see in the main magazine. She is also keen to hear from any volunteers - either those with Chinese who might get involved in editorial work, or perhaps students who are looking for a course project. 'I'd like to redesign the whole site next year. I mean redo it - from gathering requirements, user testing, etc. Though I did all that this time, I think it'd be good to redesign the site after half year running of the project.'
