Brief: EU governments approve contentious software patent bill

The European Union governments have backed a bill that would allow patents in software that is part of a mechanical device. The bill is supported by large technology companies, but has already been rejected by the European Parliament as it is seen to benefit major players at the expense of smaller ones and the open source movement.

Since EU research and industry ministers have now approved the draft legislation, it will go back to the EU assembly for a second reading.
