Submitted by Ann Light

"IEEE Pervasive Computing" is running a special on smart mobiles and the like in its April - June 2005 issue, available online by subscription.

In "Swiss Army Knife or Wallet?", editor-in-chief M. Satyanarayanan asks: 'As circuit density improves, we see a convergence of mobile device functionality—cell phones combined with PDAs or with email capability or both. Where do we go from here?'

The guest editors' introduction: "The Smart Phone - A First Platform for Pervasive Computing" sees Gregory D. Abowd, Liviu Iftode and Helena Mitchell setting the scene. It's an issue with a strong focus on people and use. For instance, papers include: "Social Serendipity: Mobilizing Social Software" by Nathan Eagle and Alex Pentland; "Supporting Social Interaction with Smart Phones" by British HCI Group chair Russell Beale; and "The Ubiquitous Camera: An In-Depth Study of Camera Phone Use" by Tim Kindberg, Mirjana Spasojevic, Rowanne Fleck and Abigail Sellen.

There are methodology papers too: "ContextPhone: A Prototyping Platform for Context-Aware Mobile Applications" by Mika Raento, Antti Oulasvirta, Renaud Petit and Hannu Toivonen, and "A Multiplatform Methodology: Developing Mobile Device Applications" by Hassan Artail.
