Maps Special: How far can 100 Euros get you?

UN is offering a week of interesting map interfaces and activities in the run up to the festive season. Today's is the work of Roxana Torre. Her "Personal World Map" was the final project for her MA Media Design, taken at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam.

'The Personal World Map has been developed with the idea of giving users another perception of the world. Normally we measure distances between places in km (or miles) but in the Personal World Map these distances have been replaced by travel time and travel costs. These two factors can give a better indication of relative position between places than geographical distances,' she says.

The map curves itself around your selected location (though there is not that extensive a list: for instance the nearest to London I could get was Paris and Amsterdam). Sometimes it seems to invert itself as it elegantly recreates a sphere on a 2D plane. Then, when you enter flight hours and money, you get a spread of places within reach. These can be seen in geographic space or in money space (mapping proximity to cheapness of travel). You can also zoom in to explore the clutter you've generated.
