Media: SonicRim on Postdesign, where People do it for Themselves

Source: SonicRim, 20 April 2006
Submitted by Ann Light

"Beyond User-Centered Design" by Elizabeth Sanders of SonicRim is about 'Postdesign': 'We are heading into a world where relationships matter more than objects and human experience is what matters most of all. We are moving into the Postdesign era. User-centered design is about designing objects for users. Postdesign is a continuous process of discovering possibilities and opportunities, with people, that address their needs and aspirations for experience.'

She goes on to look - over two short papers - at the change that occurs between designers and users as complex systems, such as networks, replace the simpler world of objects.

'The new rules of business call for new tools of design and development. These new design tools are tactile and visual and afford creative expression by all types of people. With these tools people can make visual artifacts that express their needs and wants. These visual artifacts speak directly to the designer, inspiring design concepts and relevant innovation. Thus, in the Postdesign era, innovation comes from the people who seek experiences, not from the people who sell the experiences.'
