An Inclusive Digital Economy
A workshop to address the challenges of including older people within the Digital Economy.
The University of Newcastle 14th 15th July 2008.
Keynote speaker: Gregg Vanderheiden

The Digital Economy is one of four priority areas of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. EPSRC have thus funded a number of networks of researchers charged with investigating the research issues in this field. The task of the “Inclusive Digital Economy” Network is to ensure that the Digital Economy will be truly inclusive. That is that that all citizens, including older and disabled people and other currently digitally disenfranchised groups, benefit from the advantages of a Digital Economy. The network will assess the inclusivity of current digital systems and methods for improving and extending inclusion. It will investigate the major challenges of inclusivity within the Digital Economy and will lay down the groundwork for long term research which will ensure that the UK is working towards a truly inclusive Digital Economy. Older people are a rapidly growing demographic in the UK, and elsewhere, and form an exemplar of a currently excluded group.

The first workshop will focus on those characteristics of the digital economy which present challenges paticularly in terms of the inclusion of older people. It will map out the research landscape in the digital economy with particular relevance to inclusion of older people view to formulating priorities in the research activity in the following areas:

- Transport
- Social Networking
- Interaction techniques
- Pervasive Technology
- Knowledge-Based Ontologies
- Social approach to Health

The workshop will be split into working groups. Each will produce a paper outlining the research challenges in the various aspects of the digital economy which are relevant to the inclusion of older people. These working papers will form the basis of future workshops which will scope the research needed to ensure that older people are fully included within the Digital Economy.

It is recommended that delegates bring a lap top, but some computers will be provided for preparing papers.

Applicants for the workshop should submit a one page paper outlining their research focus and areas of interest to Paula Forbes by 20th June 2008 (pforbes@computing.dundee.ac.uk)

The workshop is free, and some bursaries MAY be available to assist with travel and accommodation costs. Applications to Paula Forbes.
