Flash Critic Nielsen turns Macromedia Advisor

Long time critic of Flash and author of Alertbox: "Flash: 99% Bad", Jakob Nielsen is collaborating with Macromedia to produce guidelines for deploying the latest version.

In something of an about turn, Nielsen will be pushing the latest version Macromedia Flash MX to its limits with users to help produce guidance on designing it into usable sites. At present, Flash does not work in browsers by using their in-built functionality, causing major navigational challenges. As it becomes a more central component of many sites, usability has been jeopardised.

Unless the new version has suddenly become integrated with all kinds of browser, including old versions, most of these problems will remain, say experts. The move caused surprise in usability circles. However, Macromedia has a history of adopting its critics as collaborators. Julie Howell of the RNIB, a leading advocate for accessibility, has done a lot of work in the UK with the company on designing with Flash in a non-exclusive fashion.
