Chocolate found to combat Stress

A new study has found that chocolate can help to combat the stress of a working life.

The report found that eating roughly an ounce and a half of dark chocolate every day for two weeks reduced the levels of stress hormones in the body for those feeling highly anxious or stressed.

Published by the American Chemical Society in their Journal of Proteome Research, the study also found that the treat corrected biochemical imbalances within the body that were 'markers' for stress.

Dr Sunil Kochhar and colleagues, who worked on the project, said: "The study provides strong evidence that a daily consumption of 40 grams (1.4 ounces) during a period of two weeks is sufficient to modify the metabolism of healthy human volunteers." However, the beneficial effects of the dark treat were found to only have a positive effect on those who had high levels of stress and had no effect on people whose stress levels were normal or only slightly above normal.
