Succinct Scientist Competition promotes Usable Dissemination

Source: THES, 19 February 2003
Submitted by Ann Light

"24/7" is the quest for Britain's most succinct scientist. It's a competition presented by The Times Higher Education Supplement in partnership with the British Association for the Advancement of Science and the Annals of Improbable Research.

If you are a scientist (professional, amateur, or student), they invite you to devise a "24/7 Seminar" - your research in 24 seconds and seven worlds. I mention this here, as it is a novel way to promote a core concern of the UsabilityNews team: presenting academic information in a usable form. Maybe, this particular elevator pitch style approach won't produce great material, but it's an eye-catching way of drawing attention to a key issue.

Instructions:
You will explain your subject TWICE:
FIRST, a complete technical description in TWENTY-FOUR (24) SECONDS; and THEN a clear summary that anyone can understand, in SEVEN WORDS.

The winners, to be chosen by a panel of THES, BA and AIR experts, will be invited to perform their 24/7 seminar on stage during the Ig Nobel tour which will travel across the UK during National Science Week which starts on March 7. The show will visit London (March 7th), Manchester (10th), Edinburgh (11th), Leicester (12th) and Bristol (13th).

Each winner, having well and truly boiled a complex a subject down to seven words, will also be awarded a suitable prize.

More details, such as how to submit, can be found on the THES site (below).
